Up until 1970, fresh air on planes was pumped in through the engine intakes. After that, airline companies felt they could cut corners and save money by cutting back on fresh air ventilation.
Inside every flying air bus today, there are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) in the air space that cannot be seen or smelled. They emit from people, perfumes, food, plastics, cosmetics, solvents, fuels, exhaust gases, lubricants, polymers, cleaning products, etc.
As a result, more CO2 is present and less O2. How do you know this? You begin to feel tired, you get a headache, heart palpitations, a dizzy sensation persists and breathing can be difficult.
To make the best of it, sit near the front where there is more O2. In the back, less O2 means the ideal setup for bacteria, viruses and molds.
Turn the air vent away from your face. You can also ask for the ventilation to be increased which sometimes is possible.
Also, bring clean air with you if you like. An air purifier can be worn and is available in stores such as Magellan’s. You will breath easier for it.
